In 2005 when the concept of our shop “a gift shop for ocean-loving women of all ages” was being developed, we had to come up for a name for the store… in a flash… it was obvious… what’s more descriptive of the quintessential beach girl than… “GIDGET”!!!

The owner… with a 5’2” stature herself... definitely relates to “Gidget,” a fusion of ‘girl’ & ‘midget’.  So the fit was perfect… “Gidget’s Beach Shop”

Although the term ‘Gidget’ has been mainstreamed into our language,…

Did you know there is a REAL Gidget?  Well,… there is,… She is Kathy Kohner Zuckerman.

Kathy’s real life experiences are the basis of the fictional tale Gidget, The Little Girl with Big Ideas.  Her father, Frederick Kohner, authored the novel which quickly became a best-seller and the basis for the Gidget movies & TV Sitcom starring Sally Field in the 60s.
